Wash. trade group targets Seattle disposable-bag fee

The Washington Food Industry, a trade group for independent grocers, is seeking a referendum to overturn a new Seattle ordinance requiring a 20-cent fee on disposable plastic and paper bags. The group, which favored an educational campaign and voluntary use of reusable bags instead of the fee, has only a few weeks to collect 14,374 valid signatures. "We're opposed to it because our customers don't need an additional expense on their grocery bill," said Jan Gee, president of the trade group.
