"Chronic excreters" pose hidden polio threat

The global campaign to eradicate polio has identified one of its last and most difficult challenges: a small population of people with compromised immune systems who took the oral vaccine as children and unknowingly shed live viruses that can mutate and infect others. These rare "chronic excreters" are difficult to identify. Efforts to develop drugs that eliminate vaccine virus shedding are underway.
