Educator explores the changing definition of learning

Learning no longer is limited to the contents of textbooks, writes Joanne Yatvin, who supervises student-teachers at Portland State University and served as a president of the National Council of Teachers of English. Yatvin writes in this blog post that while many effective teachers believe students should "be able to adapt, apply, expand, and think critically about knowledge in order to function in the real world as wise, ethical, and productive individuals," schools remain dependent on standardized tests that cannot measure "generative" and "exploratory" approaches.
