GAO probes management concerns at S.C. MOX project

The Government Accountability Office wants to know whether the earlier completion of design work would have prevented cost increases and delays at the mixed-oxide fuel project at the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site in South Carolina. "According to NNSA [National Nuclear Security Administration] officials and the contractor for the MOX facility, inadequately designed critical system components, such as the gloveboxes to be used for handling plutonium and the infrastructure needed to support these gloveboxes, are among the primary reasons for the proposed cost increase and schedule delay," GAO said.
