Lifestyle change programs help patients reduce diabetes risks

Family physician Mona Roach, M.D., says patients in her Hastings, Minn., practice have lost weight and reduced their diabetes risk by participating in lifestyle change programs offered by the YMCA. Michael Rosenthal, M.D., chairman of Christiana Care Health System's Family and Community Medicine department, said four-month group programs such as those the YMCA offers can help busy primary care physicians who might only have a fraction of that time to counsel patients on preventing diabetes.
