Report: U.S. loses billions each year in weather damage to the grid

The U.S. economy loses as much as $33 billion annually to electrical outages caused by severe weather, due in part to climate change, according to a new government report that calls for enhancements to grid infrastructure. "Developing a smarter, more resilient electric grid is one step that can be taken now to ensure the welfare of the millions of current and future Americans who depend on the grid for reliable power," said the report, prepared by the White House and the Department of Energy.
