Same-sex married couples begin to receive Social Security benefits

The Social Security Administration has begun providing spousal benefits to same-sex married partners who live in jurisdictions where such unions have been legalized. The move comes after the Supreme Court ruling striking down the Defense of Marriage Act, which had denied federal benefits to same-sex couples regardless of the legal status of their marriage. The administration has not yet announced how it will address benefits for same-sex married couples in states that do not recognize such marriages.
