USDA introduces health initiative for school systems

The USDA has released new standards for food and beverages located in vending machines on school campuses. The "Smart Snacks in School" program aims to encourage students to make healthier snack and beverage choices, and has varied standards for elementary, middle and high schools. Beverages that contain caffeine are permitted in high schools, while elementary and middle schools can only stock beverages that are caffeine-free with the exception of naturally occurring trace amounts.
