The patient empowerment movement is giving patients access to more information about available treatments, but few patients have the expertise to understand the risks and benefits of each option and still need professional guidance, writes Susan Gubar, an author and ovarian cancer survivor. Cancer patients, in particular, often face a dizzying array of choices including various chemotherapies, surgery, radiotherapy, clinical trials and alternative therapies, and they must make decisions at a time of emotional vulnerability, Gubar writes.
