FDA: Alcohol-dependence drug may cause complications

The FDA warned that Alkermes' Vivitrol may have adverse effects, saying it received 196 reports of patients who experienced pain, swelling, bleeding and other problems after taking the alcohol-dependence drug. Vivitrol is an extended-release formulation of naltrexone, a generic treatment marketed by Cephalon. Alkermes did not comment, but a Cephalon spokeswoman said the complications seemed to stem from improper injection of the drug into muscle.
