Average age of first-time mothers on the rise in U.S.

The average age of first-time mothers in the U.S. rose from 21.4 years in 1970 to 25 in 2006, due in part to more births to older women, a report from the National Center for Health Statistics found. All racial and ethnic groups and all states plus Washington, D.C., showed increases in the age of first-time mothers.
