Intelligence plays key role at TSA, says former official

A former top communications official at the TSA says Erroll Southers, the man thought likely to become the agency's next chief, will bring a wealth of intelligence experience to his post. "The average person doesn't think about TSA being intel-driven, but it is very operationally intel-driven," says Ellen Howe, noting that screeners must adjust their inspections according to intelligence received by the agency. Southers, a former FBI special agent, is currently in charge of intelligence for the Los Angeles airport authority.
