Open-web design on Columbia River bridge raises questions

Engineers have challenges ahead on plans for a new bridge spanning the Columbia River between Portland, Ore., and Vancouver, Wash. "We're not saying it can't be built, and we're not saying it's a bad design; we're just saying it's a unique enough design that it's going to take further testing to move ahead," said Tom Warne, chairman of the Independent Review Panel. The current open-web design is the third design to be considered.
