U.S. highway workers learn from LEED program

Highway workers are taking cues from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design green-building certification program in an attempt to develop a sustainable-building code for road-building projects. The "Greenroads" standard is being developed at the University of Washington and tested on Oregon highway projects; it grades new roadways on criteria including noise reduction, stormwater treatment and effect on local wildlife.
