The economy has prompted a shift from homeownership to rental of apartments, as well as single-family and multifamily units. In Kansas City, Mo., an apartment-construction boom is underway as lenders open up more credit lines to developers. "Banks are much more inclined to lend on apartments," said Clay Sublett, a senior vice president at KeyBank. "It's been the strongest sector of commercial real estate the last few years."
