Earth's tectonic plates change patterns, study suggests

The pattern of Earth's tectonic plates has shifted over the course of the planet's lifetime, according to a new study. "The distribution of the large plates has not always been the same," said geodynamicist Gabriele Morra, lead study author. "The large plates have really oscillated between different patterns. This has strong implications for what is driving Earth's mantle convection."
