Fewer malpractice payouts, lower sums paid in 2012

The number and value of medical malpractice claims paid in 2012 dropped to record lows, consumer advocacy group Public Citizen reported. The declines may have been caused by physician groups' opposition to medical malpractice and a "less paternalistic" trend in government, health economist Thomas Getzen said.
