Merit bonuses link superintendent pay, student achievement in N.J.

Superintendents across New Jersey are earning bonuses of up to 15% of their salaries by meeting five goals set by their school boards under a two-year-old law that also capped their salaries. Proponents of the bonus system, including the state School Boards Association, say it provides a way to recruit and retain school leaders and tie their performance to student achievement. However, critics such as the American Federation of Teachers New Jersey contend that the bonuses offer a way around the state-instituted salary caps.
