Same-sex spouses start receiving Social Security benefits

The Social Security Administration has begun processing benefits checks for married same-sex couples following the Supreme Court's ruling on the Defense of Marriage Act. The move helps "ensure that all Americans are treated fairly and equally, with the dignity and respect they deserve," said Carolyn Colvin, acting commissioner of Social Security. It's unclear whether same-sex spouses living in states that don't recognize their marriages will be able to receive the benefits.
