Senator urges DOT to impose stricter rules on hazmat rail carriers

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., is urging the Department of Transportation to impose rules that would require rail carriers to either retrofit or stop using DOT-111 tank cars to transport hazardous materials. Schumer's request comes in light of the rail accident in Quebec, Canada, and the rapid increase in fuel-carrying trains passing through New York state.
