The hedge fund industry's carefully honed image may have been dented by rapid growth and a scenario in which too many funds were pursuing the same strategy. Also affecting hedge fund performance is the industry's heavy use of borrowed money. Recent problems at large hedge funds have trickled down to affect ordinary investors.
