Not much research is dedicated to studying attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in adults, and few adults with the disorder are identified and treated, says Russell A. Barkley, a professor of psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina. Barkley says it's important for adults to continue with medication. "This is the diabetes of psychiatry, and you've got to manage it like diabetes. The treatments do work, but they just have to be continued. The biggest obstacle right now is getting people to continue in their treatments," he said.
