Calif. veterinary lab helps win conviction with analysis of feline mtDNA

British authorities say that cat DNA, along with other evidence, helped them win a conviction in a homicide case. Authorities worked with the University of California, Davis' Veterinary Genetics Laboratory to compare DNA from cat hair near the victim's body to an animal belonging to the man ultimately convicted. The lab used a British feline DNA database to measure the strength of the match, which relied on mitochondrial rather than genomic DNA.
