Elon Musk's plan for a near-sonic mode of intercity transport by tube is generating a lot of press although many experts are reluctant to comment, according to reports. The problem may be unseen engineering difficulties in what otherwise appears to be an elegant concept. Said Ernst Frankel, an emeritus mechanical engineering professor at MIT who once proposed a similar system: "He proposes a speed of over 700 miles per hour. That's almost the speed of sound and that runs risks." However, not all are as skeptical.
