Gartner: Smartphones take global lead in sales

Lower-priced Android phones have driven a surge in global buying that for the first time has put smartphones in the lead in sales, according to Gartner's Anshul Gupta. The devices accounted for 51.8% of phone sales worldwide in the second quarter, with the volume of sales up 46.5% from a year before. Growth in Asia accounted for much of the gain, Gartner's report said.
