Researchers create heart tissue from skin cells

A team from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine has developed beating heart tissue from pluripotent stem cells derived from fibroblast cells in the skin. The cells were seeded in a matrix, and after several weeks, the tissue was capable of 40 to 50 beats per minute. The researchers said the findings could lead to treatments for advanced heart disease.
