Study ties diabetes, obesity to higher risk of cancer recurrence

A study in the Japanese Journal of Clinical Oncology revealed patients with renal cell carcinoma and type 2 diabetes were more than twice as likely to experience cancer recurrence than those without diabetes. Researchers also found obese RCC patients had more than a fourfold increased risk of recurrence compared with nonobese patients. Obese patients with diabetes also showed a lower five-year recurrence-free survival rate of 75.3%, compared with 91.9% in those without diabetes, researchers said.
