Study uncovers link between bisphosphonates, Barrett's

A study of U.S. veterans found oral bisphosphonates may be linked to a higher risk of Barrett's esophagus, particularly in cases of gastroesophageal reflux disease, researchers from the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center in Houston reported in The American Journal of Gastroenterology. "Prudence should be used in those with severe GERD or esophageal stricture, instructions on taking the meds correctly should be followed, and screening for Barrett's should be considered particularly in those with other risk factors," said Dr. Hashem El-Serag.
