Treasury hires Morgan Stanley to analyze Fannie, Freddie

Morgan Stanley has been hired by the U.S. Treasury Department to size up how well troubled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac can handle further economic stresses. The Treasury became authorized last month to lend Freddie and Fannie money or buy their stock to keep them from failing. Morgan Stanley will check whether Fannie and Freddie are accurately describing their financial strength and how much taxpayer money they would need to rescue them in an emergency.
