Although satellite operators WildBlue and HughesNet are ramping up to launch Internet services with the help of new satellites over the next few years, more traditional fiber-optic players insist that over the long haul, fiber is a less expensive alternative to satellite technology. "Fiber optic is virtually an unlimited technology," a Verizon spokesman said. "All you have to do is change the electronics on either end."
