Google to pay $12.5 billion in cash for Motorola Mobility

Google will pay $40 a share to buy Motorola Mobility in a $12.5 billion deal that gives the Android software owner its own cellphone company as well as a trove of patents, the companies announced this morning. The sale, which provides Motorola investors with a 63% premium to the stock's Friday close, would complicate the already intertwined relationships within the wireless industry by putting Google in competition with its Android backers who pay the company license fees. The companies expect the deal to close later this year or in early 2012.
