Bosses who make an extra effort when congratulating their employees, by doing something such as by going to see them rather than summoning them, make a more powerful statement, writes Jeff Haden. "Praise should reward, motivate, and inspire. Make employees come to you, or inconvenience them in some way, or somehow implicitly show your time is more valuable -- and the impact is much less powerful," he writes.
