Married same-sex couples with children who are required to file joint tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service because of the recent Supreme Court rulings may see higher bills, according to a Congressional Research Service report. Couples in higher tax brackets can phase out of certain exemptions and tax credits, say tax experts, resulting in a marriage penalty.
