Stress mounting in China's banking system

China's banking system is under strain as never before after a binge of lending that has put local governments under stress and led to industrial overcapacity and a proliferation of unproductive projects, according to a Wall Street Journal report. The problem is compounded by the growth of "shadow banking" and weak market sentiment that could complicate efforts by leading banks to shore up their capital base.
