U.S. initial unemployment claims hit 6-week high

First-time jobless claims in the U.S. totaled 311,000 last week, the biggest number in six weeks, according to the Labor Department. The four-week rolling average, viewed as a better indicator of labor-market conditions, reached 295,750, up from 293,750 the week before.
