API opposes Interior Dept. decision on deepwater-drilling reviews

The American Petroleum Institute scrutinized the Interior Department's move to limit waivers on environmental studies for offshore projects, saying the change will slow down drilling. "We're concerned the change could add significantly to the department's workload, stretching the timeline for approval of important energy-development projects with no clear return in environmental protection," said Erik Milito, API's upstream director. The department said it will no longer use "categorical exclusions" in deepwater-drilling reviews under the National Environmental Policy Act and also limit their use in shallow-water activities.
