PetroAlgae, Solazyme deals signal interest in algae-based fuels

PetroAlgae's recent $200 million initial public offering and Solazyme's recruitment of $52 million in new investments have rekindled interest in algae-based biofuels. Although industry sources say algal fuels are at least 10 years away from reaching the market, there are signs of potential growth in such areas as nutraceuticals, food-grade oil and products for the U.S. military, which has branches committed to have 50% of energy come from renewable sources by 2016.
