Facebook and Yahoo! are joining forces to test the "six degrees of separation" theory, which claims that any two people are separated by at most six relationships. The "Small World Experiment" asks users to send messages to a "target person" by selecting which of their contacts are most likely to know them; the nominated contact then does the same until, hopefully, the message reaches its destination. "This is our best chance to measure this fundamental piece of the social graph, so the more users that participate, the clearer the signal will be," said Facebook's chief data scientist, Cameron Marlow.
