FAA overhaul directive poses its own dangers, company says

Engine Components Inc. is contesting a Federal Aviation Administration directive requiring eventual replacement of cylinders on 6,000 Continental 520 and 550 reciprocating aircraft engines, according to this article. ECi says industry experience shows that such top overhauls raise the risk of "catastrophic engine failure." The FAA directive comes in response to reports of cylinder head-to-barrel separations and cracked and leaking aluminum cylinder heads.
