Judge: Chicago can shutter 50 schools

U.S. District Court Judge John Z. Lee ruled Thursday that Chicago Public Schools can move forward with its plans to close 49 elementary schools and a high school program. The district proposed the measures to cut costs and consolidate where students were attending school. Critics, however, fought the decision in court, saying the closings disproportionately affected African-American students and those receiving special-education services.
