Obesity was associated with 18% of deaths in black and white Americans aged 40 to 85, much higher than the previously estimated rate of 5%, researchers noted in the American Journal of Public Health. Obesity was more likely to be a factor in the deaths of women than men, and black women had the highest rate of obesity-related death with 27% of deaths being related to excess weight, followed by white women at 21%.
