Unemployment rate remains 8.4% in New York City

A surge of summer hiring on Wall Street failed to budge New York City's 8.4% unemployment rate in July, the state Labor Department said. The city's brokerages and investment banks added more than 2,000 positions to their payrolls, but the number of jobs on Wall Street remains 1% below last year's figure.
