Mobile asphalt plant churns 50,000 tons to repave Daytona track

Contractor Lane Construction is using a mobile plant parked at a lot at the Daytona International Speedway in Florida to mix 50,000 tons of asphalt, enough to replace the original track at the famous racecourse with four layers of new blacktop. The cement and mix for each new strip of paving is weighed and tested at least three times at a local lab. "They told me again, 'This is the track,'" said Danny James, a supervisor at Lane. "It took me about two of those reminders for me to understand that this is Daytona and this is the track. They want this perfect."
