Pollutants, body fat exhibit a "synergistic effect" on diabetes risk

A study in the journal Diabetes Care found that people in the top 10% for levels of persistent organic pollutants in their blood were almost twice as likely as those in the bottom 10% to suffer type 2 diabetes. But researchers said that the risk applied only to overweight or obese people, suggesting that excess weight and organochlorines "may have a synergistic effect on the risk of type 2 diabetes."
