Donor registry facilitates thousands of transplants yearly

The National Marrow Donor Program's Be the Match registry helps process about 4,300 transplants annually. About 60% of the transplants utilize adult blood stem cells while 20% use bone marrow and the other 20% employ umbilical cord blood. Most of the transplants for children use bone marrow based on a study that showed better results with that method, a spokeswoman for the program said.
