Private equity sees mortgage REITs as next great bonanza

Lured by potentially triple-digit returns, private-equity giants are racing to put together IPOs to launch mortgage REITs to invest in commercial and residential real estate debt. "I think several hundred percent [return] is possible," said Anton Schutz, a portfolio manager with Burnham Financial. The best opportunities to buy are probably six to 12 months away, he said.
