Affluent NYC families seek reimbursement for special-education tuition

A disproportionate number of wealthy families in New York City are seeking reimbursement for private special-education tuition under a policy that allows families to sue when they are not satisfied with public schools. "This system was not intended as a way for private school parents to get the taxpayers to fund their children's tuition," a lawyer for the state Education Department said. But some say scrutiny of the policy is unfair and that families of all economic backgrounds may legally seek an appropriate education for their children.
