Federal group explains patient consent rules for data access

The HHS' Privacy & Security Tiger Team clarified its proposed rules for health information exchanges, saying organizations must first obtain patient consent prior to sharing sensitive data beyond a direct exchange. "Providers have to offer the option to the patient whether or not they're going to participate in health information organizations," one of the panel's co-chairmen said.
