FHA could give OK today for Seattle's $2B tunnel

Voters have given the go-ahead to replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct with a 1.7-mile, 56-foot-wide tunnel, a project some are calling Big Dig West, after the very expensive, problem-plagued Big Dig in Boston. "This is Washington's opportunity to demonstrate how to build a megaproject with strong management, risk management, accountability, and to deliver a project on budget and on time," said Paula Hammond, Washington state transportation secretary. The Federal Highway Administration is expected to approve the project as early as today.
