Metformin yields better outcomes than insulin in gestational diabetes

Women with gestational diabetes who received metformin had lower mean glucose levels and neonatal hypoglycemia rates compared with those who were treated with insulin, a Brazilian study showed, but about 26% required supplemental insulin therapy. Women in the metformin group also had less weight gain than the insulin group, researchers reported in the American Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
